One death and several rescues on the Ottawa River

The body of a 25-year-old man was found on Tuesday evening, September 8, near Britannia Beach, following a response to a report that someone had entered the Ottawa River.

The Ottawa Police Service was called to the scene shortly before 8 p.m. According to information provided by the police, a person had entered the river before disappearing underwater.

Authorities say the death does not appear to be suspicious.

This tragedy comes as the Ottawa Fire Services’ (OFS) water rescue teams have been called out multiple times to the Deschênes Rapids in recent days.

Since Saturday, water rescue teams have rescued six people in the area. On Tuesday around mid-day, two swimmers found themselves in trouble in the whitewater. Firefighters were called after the two were spotted trapped in different sections of the rapids, shouting for help.

The two swimmers were eventually brought safely back to shore.

The OFS reiterated that the Deschênes Rapids pose significant risks, particularly of drowning. Strong currents, submerged rocks, and turbulent waters can quickly put even experienced swimmers or water sports enthusiasts in danger. Conditions in the rapids can change quickly, warn firefighters, who recommend never underestimating the force of moving water.

Authorities are therefore urging residents to exercise caution when near the river or on the water. Wearing a properly fitted personal flotation device is essential during water activities.
